When There is No Wind

Sailing is easy when there is wind to fill the sails of your boat. But, it becomes a much different task when there is no wind.

The same is true in business.

A new skill or project is easy to learn or work on when the motivation is easy to come by. But, what happens when the motivation is gone? When it gets hard?

The easy thing is to give up on the goal and revert to what you’ve always done. To revert to what is easiest.

But, that’s not what you should do. Especially if the goal you’re working toward is an important part of your greater business plan and goals for growth.

 

Talent Only Goes So Far

What makes the great stand out from the crowd is not their talent. Though their talent is much praised and definitely a contribution to their success.

It is their grit, their determination, their desire to succeed. These are so strong that they are willing to put in the work even when it is hard.

Especially when it is hard.

Think of an elite athlete. I guarantee that whomever you just thought of had days when they didn’t want to work out. Days when they didn’t want to practice. Days when they maybe didn’t even want to compete.

What makes them different from other athletes is that they showed up anyway. They worked out anyway. They practiced anyway. They played anyway.

They went through the motions until they found their motivation again. And, thus had athletic success the majority of us can’t even begin to dream of.

Whatever your goal is there will be times when it gets hard or you don’t want to continue. Show up anyway.

 

Show Up Anyway

Maybe you’re trying to generate leads using a new tactic or channel. Or, maybe you’re working on a content marketing plan for your insurance agency website. Or, maybe you’re undertaking switching agency management systems. Or, maybe you’re implementing a new technology or process that is going to make your agency more efficient.

Motivation to start on projects such as these, projects that will stretch you, can come from many sources.

Conferences that you leave with a lot of ideas, and you’re pumped and excited to get started. Videos or podcasts of agents talking about their exciting projects and results. Talking with other agents who are doing the things you want to try.

Regardless of exactly what it was that inspired you, when you start out on a new project, your motivation is high.

Then, after a month or so, that energy and motivation has waned. Results may not be coming as quick as you had hoped. It may be harder than you had thought it was going to be. The wind has stopped, and you’re left in your boat going nowhere.

What do you do then?

You pick up some oars and row until you find the wind again.

You go through the motions. You keep moving forward, even if it’s just small steps, until you find the motivation again.

You show up anyway.
