This is the Way: Raul Campa from Grayhawk Insurance

While Raul Campa was working as an assistant golf professional at a country club in Austin, Texas, a member offered him a job at Grayhawk Insurance's new Austin office. He initially declined the offer. But, after consulting with a friend, now the owner of Grayhawk, he decided to make the career change and jump into insurance.

Raul started out as an account executive supporting the insurance and bond producers of the agency. In 2013, he switched to a sales position, which was a challenge for him as an introvert. But, he set a goal to get uncomfortable by attending several networking events each week with the intention of meeting a few people at each event. Now, Raul is more comfortable and successful in his role because of those goals.

What Raul likes about the insurance industry: “Solving issues for clients and prospects, not only insurance issues, but risk management and safety issues.”

I work in our Austin, Texas, office. The agency’s home office is in Richardson, Texas, which is a suburb of Dallas.

Vice President of Stewardship for Grayhawk Insurance & Risk Management

iPhone 6 Plus, but an iPhone 8 Plus may be in my future

Project(s) you’re currently working on:

Professionally - Marketing to construction companies and breweries to assist with their insurance and risk management programs. 

Personally - Turning my home into a smart home. We just visited some friends that can control most of their house through Alexa. Cool Stuff.

- My family and kids

- Earning my CIC and CRM Designations

What are your goals for the next 12 months?

Professionally - Continue to help our agency grow.

Personally - Exercise and health. Continue to learn. Read one book every month.

What are your biggest professional challenges?

Social media marketing. It can be very time consuming.

Using my CRM consistently.

Analysis paralysis… overthinking things.

What do you like most about your job?

The people I get to interact with on a daily basis. 

Aside from your phone and computer, what gadget can’t you live without and why?

My Fitbit. It lets me know how lazy I am.

What are the top three apps you use on your phone?

Facebook, Outlook mail app, the Phone app-(after all it is a phone).

Describe your workspace.

Organized mess.

How do you manage your to-do list?

Black and red Notebook. Start with weekly goals/to-dos, and add items as needed.

What’s your best time-saving tip or hack?

Do it right the first time.

Drink 100 ounces of water

Sports talk radio.

Nothing. I don’t subscribe to Netflix.

How do you decompress?

Play with my kids. Watch Sports. Play golf.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

My kids. Actually, I have to get them out of bed but just excited to have another day with them.

Who are your business idols and why?

Gary Johnson-Gary was the founder of Grayhawk and taught me/us everything we know. Gary came from Willis and taught us how to bring the large market mentality to the small/middle market. Gary passed away in 2012 unexpectedly, but I still think and utilize the lessons he taught us.  

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Be yourself!
